History of Sackets

 

 

History
Sackets Harbor is a small village on a beautiful natural harbor that has a proud history dating back to the founding of the village in 1801 by Augustus Sacket of New York City. The following is a brief timeline of major events at Sackets Harbor that are part of our American History:
  • 1808 U. S. troops are stationed at Sackets Harbor to stop smuggling into Canada
  • 1812 U. S. declares war on Great Britain. Sackets Harbor becomes headquarters for the U. S. Navy and Army on the northern frontier. The Canadian Provincial Marine Fleet attacks Sackets Harbor but is repulsed by the brig Oneida and a 32 pound cannon mounted on shore.
  • 1813 British and Canadian forces attack Sackets Harbor but are repulsed by U. S. troops after a lengthy battle.
  • 1816-19 The first phase of Madison Barracks at Sackets Harbor is constructed by the 2nd U. S. Infantry.
  • 1817 President Monroe visits to view construction of Madison Barracks.
  • 1832 Dr. Samuel Gutherie conducts experiments which lead to the first know use of chloroform as and anesthetic.
  • 1848-49 Lieutenant Ulysses S. Grant and his wife are stationed at Madison Barracks.
  • 1851 Captain U. S. Grant with his wife and son returns to Madison Barracks for a 2nd tour of duty.
  • 1853 The Sackets Harbor & Ellisburg Railroad is founded and begins service. The rail depot in Sackets Harbor is currently the home of Sackets Harbor Brewing Company.
  • 1898-1901 The 9th U. S. Infantry, stationed at Madison Barracks, fights in Cuba and the Philippines during the Spanish Boxer Rebellion.
  • 1917-18 Madison Barracks trains officers for service in World War I.
  • 1990 10th Mountain Division Troops stationed at nearby Fort Drum who live in Sackets Harbor participate in “Desert Storm”.
  • Present 10th Mountain Division troops fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq visit and live in our area and when at home frequently visit SHBC pubs and restaurants and enjoy Sackets Harbor
